I think it's important to keep in mind the distinction between fandom policing and fandom just not being interested in certain things.

I mean, both are things that happen for sure, don't get me wrong. But I think a lot of this is less about policing and more about femslash fans just liking certain narratives more and caring a lot about canon and stuff.

That shit doesn't just happen naturally anon. People do get a lot of aggressive responses and even hate for shipping dark femslash (look at Steven Universe fandom). You forget that shippers who ship canon can get super wanky about people who ship noncanon and put them off the fandom, and femslash is no exception to this shit.
