I was surprised by my fundamentalist Christian brother voting for Trump because I figured he was too vulgar for my brother. Not that I thought he would vote for Hillary. I thought he'd skip out on the election this time.

I kept telling people that when they said moderate Republicans would stay home they were fooling themselves. They say that the horrible oik is horrible and beneath them, but come election day they always troop out and pull the lever for them. The GOP base always turns out. It was a mistake to think that they'd stay home, much less claim they'd somehow vote for Hillary instead.

I didn't think that about Republicans in general. Just about my brother and his girlfriend because they're the type to refuse to watch R-rated movies or any other ones with too much swearing or any references to drugs or too many references to sex. She once refused to lend me a book because after she got it she found out there was drug use mentioned in it and she felt she would be supporting that by lending it to me. Purity, or one idea of it that's not aligned with Trump, is important to them.

Those Republicans who actually have principles have left tbh.

People got really good at just glossing over all the inconvenient "grab 'em by the pussy!" stuff.

All of my immediate family voted Hillary, but I have an aunt and an uncle (and possibly some of their spouses/kids) who I suspect may have voted Trump. Suspect, because my mom very pointedly did not ask them, because she doesn't want to know (they're her siblings). I think it would really upset her, and she like, kind of knows the answer but doesn't want to find out.

Mom's an ex-Republican, and her whole family is still pretty conservative. But she and her closest sister moved pretty significantly to the left this past cycle. Not far left, mind you, but they're at least center if not slightly left-of now.

tl;dr I feel your pain kinda but I'd be so sad if someone in my immediate family voted for him so I'm sorry :(

My mom would be able to sympathize with your mom. She's not an ex-Republican like yours is-she's always been more liberal-but she has a sister and brother who are VERY conservative and supported Trump, and she's found herself holding her tongue a lot at family gatherings as a result. She did have another sister who shared her political views, but that sister passed away a few years ago).

Many of my relatives are much more conservative than my immediate family. My sister, mom, and I definitely feel like outliers*. And in my town in general, I know a few other liberal people personally, but more often than not I'm likely to run into conservatives and Trump supporters. So I and my family get a front row seat to a lot of the conservative/Trump-supporting mindset in my neck of the woods.

*(I also keep thinking about how my dad would react to Trump being president if he were still alive, He'd be sitting here like, "What the hell were people thinking?!")

I don't know what I'd do if I actually knew for sure someone in my family voted for Trump (and I do have strong suspicions about some extended family members but for the sake of harmony I don't bring them up). I would just be so appalled and disappointed.

I didn't even ask my brother who he voted for. He sent me a typical catching-up email and mentioned that it was the first election he had voted in and his candidate won. We don't talk about politics. I don't even know what he thinks my politics are since I haven't been open about the way I drifted away from the fundamentalism I used to share with him, but for years I've defended people under the cover of judge not and love your neighbor and all that. I'm not out to him.

I went to church before election day and the people in charge spoke about a "difficult decision" and then one of them (female preacher) actually said that it all came down to being about hte supreme court. Basically that it was "a hard decision" to vote for someone like trump, but he would save us by appointing someone who would get rid of abortion.

I haven't been back since. I used to think it was dumb to say the church should never tell people how to vote, that it was just another way to be offended about stuff, not wrong to share opinions...but that really rankled me. Maybe I care more now. Maybe I just don't want to hear how I should vote for someone i consider truly evil.

Maybe I'm just not a good lil Repulicristian anymore. >:( >:( >:(
