wasn't there a movie that was a collection of animated shorts that did this? I vaguely remember it from my college days. Something about a green corrupting gem of evil or something that passed through each story. Heavy metal sound track. Animated nudity. I think someone slept with a robot? I know in my sleep deprived state I often missed huge chunks of what was really going on on TV while I was studying but I'm pretty sure I'm not misremembering any of that.

Yup! It was in fact, called Heavy Metal and was loosely based on stories from the fantasy/sci-fi magazine of the same name. Check it out! It's no masterpiece and there's a lot in it that socially/culturally isn't quite...how should I put it, kosher today, but nevertheless it has its' place in history and one supremely kickass soundtrack.
