Re: Star Wars

I don't see how it could be a good Star Wars movie if it's not on-brand. It's not Star Wars. It's like the new Star Trek that had nothing in common with the original show except for names and design. I don't want that in Star Wars.

I think the Star Wars universe, in creative terms, is bigger than the Star Wars brand, as a marketing entity

I think we're talking about brand differently. I'm not talking about the marketing entity. I'm talking about what Star Wars is. What the core of the stories is. What the tone of the movies is. What the themes are. LucasFilm is guarding that for Star Wars fans. That's what they are doing by firing the directors, and I'm glad they are. I don't want something that doesn't feel like Star Wars. No matter how good the film is as a story, if it's not Star Wars, then it shouldn't have the Star Wars brand on it. There are other places for that kind of film to be made. The studio interfering in this case was good for the fans.

Do you think Disney cares about that stuff from a creative point of view?

Yes! Even if you think they're a heartless machine (which I don't - I've seen so much BTS stuff that shows the people making the movies and making decisions really love Star Wars, including Kennedy), it's in their best interests to keep their product in good standing for the fans. Yes, Disney does have to make money but they know how to do that while making a good product. I think their last two films were great.

Plus, Disney has comics and books and cartoons to try different ideas out, and they are doing that. There's been a wealth of interesting stuff from them. They are testing out strange ideas there. The big tent-pole movies should appeal to as wide an audience as possible, which means being family friendly and hitting the Star Wars feel. I think they're doing all the right things from a business standpoint and a creative one.
