I was SO excited to hear this song and while it's good....yeah, it was kind of a bummer. Not bad, but a little bit of a letdown. It started off like this dark glam rock and just went to....fine glam rock. Also kind of didn't fit the theme of the other songs.

The entire soundtrack is super showtuney which is fine because we get like three reprises of How Far I'll Go and I do like how [the best song in the movie] Where You Are is like a giant group song that I don't remember being super prevalent in older Disney Films (the closest is probably [my favorite Frozen song] Frozen Heart, IMAMOOY or Bells of Notre Dame or Belle or Mine, Mine Mine are probably other examples)

My favorite songs were We Know the Way and You Know Who You Are, but Where You Are and How Far I'll Go were great as well. And I totally didnt' mind Your Welcome either.

...Is it intentional that those titles are so samey

Nah, group songs are a big thing since the 80s (I think about this a lot, I don't know why.)

The Little Mermaid had 'Under the Sea' (you could probably also include 'Kiss the Girl' if you wanted)

The Lion King had 'Can't Wait to be King' (or however the title actually goes)

Aladdin had 'Friend Like Me' (which is mostly Genie but IS a big spectacle) or maybe the Prince Ali song when they come rolling into Agrabah.

Mulan had 'A Girl Worth Fighting For'

Beauty And the Beast had 'Be Our Guest' (or that one that the villagers sing about her at the beginning of the movie or hell, maybe even the one about Gaston)

The thing that I like is usually the big group numbers (and the ones I tend to think of usually happen in the first act of the movie, just like the one in Moana) also end with a sudden pop. Like. It just ends. And a lot of times with the character they're singing about disappearing. (Moana going off to the ocean, Ariel disappearing with Flounder, Simba and Nala running off and leaving Zazu behind, etc)

I just remember laughing when I heard that song. It was so...goofy.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-29 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not surprised. He was such a random villain.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-29 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't quote me on this, but I think he was meant to have a bigger role but the final version of the film didn't seem to really have a place for him.

I liked the song, but yeah he definitely felt like a random villain in the grand scheme of things. Kinda sad. :( I miss villain songs.

Yeah, him and the coconut pirates both, IMO. It's like the writers said "Okay, our Story Formula says we need Obstacles to Her Journey here and here, so... let's do these guys. What do you mean, they're random and silly? No, they're awesome. Hush." And, I mean, they were fun, but they weren't... I dunno. Personal enough?

And maybe it's just me not having the cultural context for the coconut pirates. Is there a cultural context?

Yeah, it was the weakest one, but I hardly even saw him as a villain. He was just like... an obstacle. Nothing was really the "big bad villain", imo.

Whaaaa? That is my favorite song! Blasphemy!

I enjoyed the song but it wasn't my favourite from the movie.

This.

I was the complete opposite. The whole movie was pretty been there done that for me, but Shiny (and the cool artsy bits done with the tattooes) were the only redeeming factors for me.

I agree. Everyone else complains about Your Welcome it seems. I liked Your Welcome. This one, though, I did not.

I did like Shiny but I really liked You're Welcome. I didn't realize people complained about it - I thought it was very clever (for lack of a better word.)

(Anonymous) 2017-06-29 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I felt the same when I first watched the movie but it's really grown on me over time. It's still not my favorite song in the movie but I do enjoy it a lot.

Well, I loved Bowie-crab amd his song :P I can see why it's divisive - it's tonally very different from the other songs. But idk man I liked it.

Huh. That was my favourite part. I hated Maui's song and straight up skipped the Grandma's Dead Here's Your Motivational Rise Over Setbacks Song.

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Oddly, I really liked it. When you listen to it along with thecscene, it's disturbing (at least to me). Which is why I thought it was a great villian song (Not the best, but definitely fun along "be prepared" lines)

(Anonymous) 2017-06-30 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't like it when it first started, because I thought it was a deviation from the plot a la "Fixer Upper" from Frozen (fuck that scene), but when it turned into him calling out Maui's backstory and insecurities via mockery, I liked it a lot better, because it became a tearing-down-the-hero song (not quite like "Poor Unfortunate Souls" but in that vein, if that makes sense) instead of a...look-at-me-I'm-shiny song.

It's definitely not my favorite villain song, but I've heard worse.

I hate that awful Bowie impression that actor does so yeah, never going to be a fave with me.

I think this song is the Great Divider for some; those who absolutely adored the film feel this song is misplaced, and those who liked Moana just fine but aren't in love with it think this song was the best. That's only a generalization of course, but Shiny is different from all the other songs so it's understandably divisive.

(I'm a "liked Moana just fine" and Shiny is my favorite song in the movie. I love the Bowie parody of it but the rhymes are so good too!)

(Anonymous) 2017-07-08 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
But I loved it. It was so funny to have a song about a crab wanting to eat a human as opposed to the song in The Little Mermaid about a human wanting to eat a crab. That really tickled me for some reason.
