It doesn't read that way to me. But I'm probably biased because as an attorney, it really speaks to me and fits my opinion on what I want to do. It isn't white savior to me. It is giving access to the system and a voice to those the system oppresses. In the case of the book it doesn't work, which is an important message too, but just trying is important. I don't know. I just don't see the white savior thing.

Yeah, that's basically how I saw it. It's about an attorney doing his job as an attorney. For a client who's black and facing charges that were racially motivated, and that's an important theme but it's not as if being falsely accused of a crime is a situation white people are expected to save themselves from without a lawyer's help, either.

Absolutely. Race is a factor, but so is class. That's why I'm so into doing legal services work. Our system is set up so that access is often based on whether you can afford to pay. And that's just flat out wrong.

Honestly, this book had such an impact on me from the first time I read it. I avoided reading Watchmen because I knew it was going to dissapoint and have an impact on Mockingbird for me.
