But why assume that via his wife is the only possible way he could get the message that gay people aren't evil? This also assumes that everyone is naturally a homophobe in the 1700s and it's not possible to think differently.

He's the leading male character in a romantic drama, so I don't know what he does or who else he interacts with when he's not looking muscular in a kilt or angsting over Claire but that's all I've seen really.

https://queerscotland.com has some interesting writing on historical attitudes towards homosexuality in Scotland but overall they don't seem positive. Is it possible to think differently? Sure. Is it likely if you've only ever heard people give negative opinions? Idk.
