I'm with you OP. I couldn't give a shit about Yondu in the first one, in fact I'd say he was more on the annoying side for me cool arrow trick aside. But I sobbed by the end of the second film, over YONDU of all people. I accept that for some people it seemed rushed or shoe-horned but it pitched it at a level that worked for me emotionally apparently. I thought he was one of the highlights, especially as in character-interest terms (esp connected to Quill) the likes of Ego went off the rails after so much early promise.

I second all of this.

This had probably been said a few times, but for me, the issue is the dishonesty. Yondu wasn't THAT bad in the first film, but he was pretty bad. And to go from sassy, murderous gangleader with a somewhat questionable soft spot for Quill, to his surrogate father and secret hero-- it's just shady. It's cheap. In the first film, Quill couldn't convince greedy, single-minded Yondu that swiping a galaxy-destroying weapon was a bad idea--- and in the second film he's got a heart of gold, risking the wrath of Ego to save kids.

I like the storyline, really. Yondu is/was a great character, and it was nice to see that particular actor get to play hero. I just wish it wasn't so obvious that they hadn't planned it from the start. YMMV.

I was one of the anons commenting on an earlier secret about how I didn't buy into Yondu's character and story in the second movie, and IAWTC. Anon above has perfectly articulated why it didn't work for me. I understand why it hit people hard, but the disconnect between who Yondu was in the first movie and who he was in the second movie meant that emotional payoff of the latter didn't really resonate with me.
