I think of all the Spice Girls Victoria has the best sense of humor.

Yeah, it was a catastrophe. And not even in a fun way like when Jedward were on Buzzcocks. It was just shit.

So basically you complain about a woman who isn't funny being on the panel of a comedy show and then you complain that it gives men an excuse to complain that women aren't funny... Ok.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-02 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, ok so... first of all, no where in the secret does it say "men", it says "asshats" - plenty of people, men AND women, have said women aren't as funny as men - but hey, nice conclusion-jumping.

Secondly, the OPs argument is perfectly valid?? I'm not sure what fight you're trying to pick here, but by putting a female non-comedian on a comedy panel show FULL of male comedians, it does indeed give fuel to the asshats who want to accuse women of being unfunny. Because when the ONLY woman on a comedy panel show isn't funny, it's easy to point fingers and go "SEE??"

OP wasn't saying *WOMEN* in general aren't funny, just that Mel B, personally, isn't funny.

OP isn't saying women in general aren't funny, though. They're saying Mel B specifically isn't funny, and they don't want people using her to validate their shitty generalizations about women not being funny. I agree.

I could have done without OP calling her a cow, though.

AYRT

Ah, ok now it makes sense. I really didn't get the secret (maybe my reading comprehension really does suck), but now I do.

This is a pretty aggressively bad misreading of the secret

I think in the future you're going to want to work on your reading comprehension skills before you try and lay down the snark, anon.

what are you talking about

hooked on phonics can work for you

I remember this one because she was so awful. It's not even about being a bitch, it's that she seemed genuinely unaware that she was supposed to be on a comedy quiz show and was wet-blanketing everyone else's attempts to make the show funny.

Urgh - I haven't seen it but I went to watch Never Mind the Buzzcocks (UK) being filmed (circa 2001) and she was a guest. She did exactly the same. It ran really long because she kept blurting out this obnoxious half-laugh "HA!" while all the comedians were halfway through their punchlines, so they had to re-record. She interrupted everyone frequently -- Mark Lamarr the most -- and generally gave answers that implied she had no idea what she was talking about. It was just cringe-inducing every time she opened her mouth. (I was amazed when I saw the final cut of the ep, because there were whole minutes in a row when she appeared to be silent. Even some moments where she gave a less-than-utterly-thick-answer. The editors at the BBC are talented.)

IMHO, Mel B is one of the thickest people on the planet. And, as is so often the case with thick people, also one of the loudest.

Also went to see Britain's Got Talent being filmed. Contestant had auditioned before, and Mel asked why she didn't make it last time. Contestant clearly didn't want to answer, kept saying "Well, personal issues, but I'm feeling so much better now" or "It was a difficult time, but now I'm in the right place to really apply myself" and Mel B bullied her on and on, and everyone around me was whispering about how obvious it was that Contestant didn't want to tell the full story. After about 10 mins of badgering, Mel B had forced Contestant to share the full story of her miscarriage and subsequent marriage breakdown.

She's just horrible and really doesn't deserve any airtime.

That sounds terrible, but you know, I'm not surprised. She's plain old RUDE, the kind of person who frequently doesn't "get" jokes or understand what's going on but instead of paying attention or letting other people talk she'll try to steamroll everyone else with loud, obnoxious remarks instead. Why shows keep inviting her on, I have no idea.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-02 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
That's kind of what it felt like at Buzzcocks. It was like she knew that it was a joke, so she had to laugh, but she didn't get why it was funny, so would randomly laugh in the middle of a sentence, because didn't know that the punchline hadn't happened yet.

You're right about not paying attention too. Mark would be doing the intro for the next round (the scripted bit) and she'd suddenly look up, all confused, and yell "What's going on?"

People still care about the spice girls??

(Anonymous) 2017-07-03 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
She really was weird on this show, like... did she honestly not know it was a comedy panel? Was she not getting the jokes? What was going on there? She was such a buzzkill.

yeah she sucked, but Richard was great as always: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBk3Yi7DI44
