I agree but I think on the most fundamental level it's a political problem, and that's the issue that really has to be solved. Managing the transition of automation in and of itself isn't that hard.

The politicians won't really deal with it until it starts hitting the management sector (in the next five or so years, projected) and suddenly it is them having to go on welfare or take jobs in the fields. That is when the politicians will start realizing that -across the entire western world- that their bootstraps narrative has failed, when it hits the middle management centre-right voters. It is okay to call to whip the poors a bit harder, but the two-cars in their garage demographic? Then something will be fucking done.

To be even more specific, I believe it's a question of ideological decisions, not a question of technocratic mismanagement.

There is a large segment of the 1% who are relishing the idea of large numbers of unemployed people because it gives them a chance to destroy employment rights and return to the Edwardian days of the large house with its fleet of servants who daren't say no. It fits with their pseudo-Randian ideology, and I think it is horrific that people are not doing more to oppose this.
