Are you sure? Listening to the lyrics, there's the lines suggesting a depression "Planet earth is blue and there's nothing I can do" then the "Tell my wife I love her" and only after that does ground control identify that "Your circuits dead there's something wrong".

I'm wondering if the line "I think my space ship knows which way to go" I suggestive that he sabotaged the ship knowing he would die.

I always thought he killed himself, though in some sort of weird space euphoria where he thought he was going to become one with the universe or something.
