it basically comes from the same place (woman author wants to bang character/actor but doesn't want to write OC cause they know nobody will read it)

Um, no, definitely not for me. Pretty much any OT3 I have, I'll eventually start wondering how the least obvious leg would interact romantically when it's just the two of them together. Sometimes I find the resultant pairing a huge turn-off (Eliot Spencer/Parker, Pepper/Rhodey, Athelstan/Lagertha), and other times I end up shipping it hardcore (Poe/Rey, Lestrade/John Watson, Elizabeth Burke/Neal Caffrey).
