Reylo shipper here. That's not my experience at all.

I hope you aren't like this, but most of the Reylo shippers I talk to keep trying to undermine Finn's story and relationship with Rey, push Finn to the background of his own narrative, or otherwise erase Finn from TFA to make room for Kylo. Additionally, there's a fine line between justifying someone's abusiveness, vs recognizing someone's abusiveness but believing they can redeem themselves from it. I've seen far more of the former than the latter in the Kylo fandom. It's one thing to give a villain a redemption arc - it's another thing entirely to believe the villain doesn't need it (even more so when people try to claim that a hero *does* - especially when the villain and hero are white and POC respectively).

DA - I've seen a little of that, but at the same time I have to wonder how much kneejerk reaction it is to the tumblr purity culture thing that you can't ship 'bad' characters, so obviously the only solution is to explain why Kylo's not 'bad'?

Because so often for other characters I see people going
"Yes, what they did was a bad thing, they recognized it, they tried to make up for it, they apologized, they haven't ever done it again."
"So you're saying it's OK that they did BAD THING?! You're totally ok with abuse?! You can't say they're BAD and still like them without promoting BAD!"
".... Ok, fine, you know what? They did nothing wrong, they were a perfect cinnamon roll. They've never done anything wrong in their life."

Ayrt

In the early days, I did see some of the undermining of Finn's status as a main character, but the fandom has been good about calling that shit out after the first few months after the movie's release. Like many Reylo shippers, though, I don't reblog much Finn or Finnrey (which I also ship) because of horrible, gatekeeping "fans" who throw tantrums if a Reylo shipper dares reblog that content. Which then makes those same "fans" turn around and accuse us of hating/sidelining Finn and racism, etc. It's a no-win cycle.

I don't view Kylo's actions towards Rey as abusive. They are enemy combatants. His actions are shitty, though, no question about that.

TFA pretty clearly sets out that Kylo is conflicted about what he's doing on behalf of Snoke and the First Order. That says to me he'll probably get a redemption arc. Finn obviously doesn't need one; he's done nothing to be redeemed from.
