Stop comparing fanfiction to movies and published books. Rey is an extremely popular character with mainstream audiences and most of fandom outside the small pockets that hate her for being a Sue. People hated Gary Stu fanfic just as much as Mary Sue fanfic, there just wasn't as much of it because most of fandom that writes fic is female. Your proposed double standard does not exist.

Um, no. What happened to Rey is what led to my change of mind regarding Mary Sues, so it's relevant to talk about. What I saw when it came to Rey was that there was a ton of discussion in the places I went re: her about Mary Sues in general, including in film and in fanfiction. Both were mentioned. They're intertwined in a lot of discussion. Having a positive role model in film and having a creative outlet to explore a positive take on yourself are on the same spectrum for me, especially since both did get a lot of hate.

Nice strawman!

I'm making smoothies and using all the straws to drink them.

(Yes, I know it's actually hay. I'm being pedantic.)

Bwuh? There was no strawman in there. Nothing that could even mistakenly be called a strawman. How about at least looking up what buzzwords mean before you decide to use them?
