(Anonymous) 2017-07-03 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)First, in this specific subthread, we're talking about why someone would be in the closet, and whether someone being tolerant of gay people is evidence that they're not in the closet. And I don't think it is evidence - I think there are all kinds of reasons why someone might or might not be in the closet. Which is why I said that. You don't have to be homophobic to be in the closet.
Second, we're talking about whether the fact that Dean says that he's straight in the TV series means that he is definitely and unquestionably straight, or whether there are other plausible interpretations. And I think other interpretations are plausible and permissible, because there's a lot of valid reasons why somebody could talk that way.
And then what you're talking about in this post is whether Dean is, in fact, gay or bisexual. I haven't said anything about that and I'm not that interested in saying it either way. Don't really have a horse in the race. What I'm saying is what OP of this secret was saying, and what people have been saying all along, which is: the fact that Dean says that he's straight is not the final word in terms of plausible interpretations of his sexuality.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-04 01:38 am (UTC)(link)You mean that direct question which had nothing to do with the conversation at hand?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-04 02:40 am (UTC)(link)Never mind that the anon who said "lotta reasons" was almost certainly referring to the reasons why someone might remain closeted despite not being a violent homophobe, and not claiming that there are a lot of reasons why the character specifically is queer.
"Okay so why do you think he is gay!? is a completely nonsensical response to "people are closeted for many reasons." You might even say it dances entirely around the point.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-04 02:34 am (UTC)(link)And I don't know if I have a more useful response on the other one. There are a lot of conceivable reasons why someone might be in the closet other than homophobia. That's all I'm saying, I don't have a particular one in mind.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-04 02:58 am (UTC)(link)Why would they need to go into an argument equipped with evidence proving a hypothesis they don't believe in and don't intend to argue for?
