What do you mean? That the real world impacts what the fictional context is? I agree, but I still don't think there's any reason not to take Dean at face-value when he says he's straight.

Nayrt but I think anon is saying we're supposed to treat that world as if it's real, and if so, I agree. Insisting that we view fiction through the lens of "who wrote it, when and why" sucks all the life and enjoyment out of a story imo.

The "real world" reason for Dean to be lying would still need to show up in the series at some point. Fictional characters have to be given motivation and canon evidence for lying in order to lie. He could be lying about liking classical rock, too, but there's no canonical reason to think so.
