112: As an analytic-type fan, I often feel like fandom hates me for thinking too much about stuff. Grass is always greener.

114: ...I would ask "are you me?" except the picture is from Fievel Goes West (meh) and not the original An American Tail (squeeeee!)

117: Macross Plus was FUCKING AWESOME. And if you don't see that, you're blind.

125: I sympathise. I don't actually think he's bad so much as overrated. I mean, really really REALLY overrated. He has a lot of flaws that his fans simply refuse to acknowledge, and they'll jump all over you if you dare to point them out.

128: OMG Lost at Sea! I love that comic. I wish I was able to be that honest or that supportive.

154: Yeah, it's not that good. The twisty cat-and-mouse plot and the handsome art are all it has going for it. The characters are one-dimensional, and the writer doesn't really exploit the concept to the full. And Misa makes me want to hurl.

156: ...I wouldn't have said anything either. (Teenage boy reading Loveless? I wouldn't want him to know I'd read it too... ).

154. Yeah, uh. I'm a huge fan of the series and I agree with you. That's pretty sad. Basically, Ohba had a good idea, but sucks at fleshing it out and thinks her best character is a typical angry nerd (Mikami.) Which is why I adore fandom so much, it pretty much breathes life into otherwise just damn cool-looking characters. Also yes @ Misa.

156. I know plenty of dudes who've read Loveless. Straight dudes. Is it really that rare? Or am I misinterpreting your comment here?

Re: 156

[identity profile] puritybrown.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
154: Normally I never hate characters, but I hate Misa. I hate her so much. She's an intelligent and independent woman who turns into a doormat whenever Light is in the room. CRUSHKILLDESTROY!

156: I don't know how rare it is for straight guys to like Loveless. It's just, for me, because its about a quasi-semi-sorta-kinda-sexual relationship between an adult and a child, I'd feel weird about being all "o hai loveless is teh awsum!" to a teenage boy. Being 28 years old myself. It might come across as creepy to him, and even if it didn't, I'd feel like I was being creepy. I think that may be the source of the OP's discomfort?

Was that the one with the rape amnesia plotline? Awesomely ridiculous!

Re: 117

[identity profile] puritybrown.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
...I could call Hamlet "the one with the crazy girl who shoves flowers at everyone" and I wouldn't be lying, nor would I be accurately representing the play.

... I can't believe you compared that drawn-out piece of melodrama to Shakespeare. It was fun, sure (until it started dragging, anyway) but it wasn't great.

Re: 117

[identity profile] puritybrown.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not comparing it to Shakespeare. I'm pointing out that even the greatest masterpieces in literature can be made to sound ridiculous if you take certain plot events out of context; this is much more the case with anything involving transforming fighter planes and AI idol singers.

I'm not interested in debating the merits of Macross Plus with an anonymouse, but bad rhetoric annoys me.

Lost at Sea, huh? Thanks for naming it! :D

Amazon link (http://www.amazon.com/Lost-Sea-Bryan-Lee-OMalley/dp/1932664165/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212362133&sr=8-2). It's by Bryan Lee O'Malley, creator of Scott Pilgrim, and it is very good indeed (although it's not very like Scott Pilgrim except in the art style).

Thaaanks! Well, I don't know Scott Pilgrim either, I must say. ^^; I just thought the scan from the secret looked interesting.
