First of all: Duh. It's angsty and over-dramatic. It's based more off of the movie than the book. Every Wicked fan out there knows that.

However, I can never take anyone seriously when they complain that it ruined the original, especially when the book is anything but light-hearted. It was a political satire, not some fluff book. The only thing Wicked did differently is that it was more blatant and obvious.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the musical, considering it's a Disneyfied version of the book.

Well, since I'm assuming that you said it was childhood-raping, you feel that it in someway ruined the original or ruined how you felt about the original, which is essentially the same thing.

Not the OP, but when I say it ruined* the original, I'm mostly referring to the Wizard. I wouldn't have cared if it were just making the political side of things more obvious, but having him be a genocidal rapist was too much. It was just too radically different from the tone of the original books, and like the OP, I was always especially fond of the Wizard. So I guess after that I wasn't really predisposed to evaluate the rest of the book on its own terms.

*Well, not ruined ruined, but there was an uncomfortable residue for a while.

Well, okay, I suppose I can get that, but, really, I personally didn't see a huge change in the Wizard's personality. This was a guy who was willing to take over a city he knew nothing about, lie to the citizens for years, kill people for seemingly no reason (the Wicked Witch of the West in the original book wasn't that evil :/) . . . Yeah.

But, whatever. *shrugs* If the Wizard's the only thing that bugged you, then it's really not a big deal. Although, I didn't really see him as a rapist. I always thought that he genuinely was trying to be nice to Melena and since Melena was pretty easy, they just ended up having sex. I don't think he knew what would happen if she drank the Magic Elixir. :/
