I think overall most Harry Potter translations are fairly good

You clearly have never been exposed to the Italian translations. They screwed up the names do badly that they eventually issued an apology in the later books. :/

That's really unfortunate. D: Did they screw up character names too or just names of things like Hogwards and Diagon Alley?

But I haven't heard anything awful about the Spanish translation, so I think the secret-maker is all right with her canon. Could be wrong there too, though. :| I was horribly generalizing based on my knowledge of only Asian translations.

Hogwarts and Diagon Alley were left alone, though Knockturn Alley became Notturn Alley, which is atrocious for many reasons including trying to turn an Italian word into an English-sounding word when there could have been many other ways to get the point across.

But mostly is was the character names. Some of them were fine (Snape became Piton), others were understandable (Dumbledore is pretty hard to pronounce for an Italian), but the great majority were completely unnecessary and seemed to be there only because the translators hated us and systematically changed every name they came across (see: McGonagall into McGranitt).

And then there's Neville Paciok, which is just plain bad.

Although, yeah, I haven't heard anything about the Spanish translations.
