You're not alone! Basically I'm an older sister who was prim, proper, pleasing to adults, etc., and I have a younger sister who was all tomboyish and resented the hell out of me because of those things when we were about Sansa and Arya's age. I feel for Sansa. ;) What does scare me is that my 2nd favorite character is Littlefinger. I know he's kinda, well, evil, but I'm pretty convinced that he's the only person with enough smarts/administrative skills to actually fix the mess as it stands. I am openly rooting for him and will be crushed when he meets his end, even though everyone speculates that Sansa will help orchestrate said end.

Quite frankly, I hope DWD comes out quickly because that means I can get it done and behind me. Jon and Dany bore the hell out of me, I'm kind of 'meh' on the Greyjoys and while Tyrion is awesome, it's still going to be hell to read a book without any real action/updates on LF and Sansa. I'm such an ASOIAF contrarian...LOL For further heresy--while the rational, good side of me is glad that GRRM doesn't encourage (to put it nicely) ASOIAF fic, the evil, GAFF/Deleterius/MST3K side of me really does wish it was a free-for-all. I'm sure some ASOIAF fanfic would be good, but we both know that lots of it would plumb depths of badness not seen in a long, long time.

Though he's not one of my favorites, I have to admit that I kind of like Littlefinger too--it's kind of awesome seeing a lowborn man playing the members of the highest houses like puppets. Though I'm sure, like you, that he's in for a bad end.
And I totally agree on Jon and Dany too--they are the most generic characters in ASOIAF (in terms of fantasy archetypes) IMO. I'm rooting for Westeros to repel Dany's invasion, honestly. And I kind of wish Jon hadn't become commander. :P For the record, my favorite characters (besides Sansa) would probably be Jaime and Tyrion.
A sick part of me does want to see badfic/general fannish wankiness for ASOIAF, too! Mostly because it would keep me entertained between the (eternal) waits between books. And partly just because these books deserve a huge fanbase, though a huge fandom might ruin it...hmm--awesomely bad Jaime/Loras slash or a respectable fandom? Tough choice. ;)
I have a bad feeling that ADWD is going to be chock-full of typical fantasy LOLMAGICK because so much of it will be focusing on Jon and Dany (the Others and the dragons, respectively). Nooo! I need my delicious political machinations and mind games, dammit! >:O At least there's Tyrion...

I agree with everything you've said--is there a particular discussion forum/community that you enjoy for these books? I find most of the major ones really frustrating--they seem to be dominated by the worst, snobbiest, "these books advance the genre because of their gritty realism" fans, who are, of course, the ones who worship Dany and Jon and insist on discussing PTWP, R+L=J and all that other stuff over and over.

I also like the political machinations (I bow at Oleanna's feet, and Kevan Lannister is also awesome)--GRRM is excellent at giving random chance and mechanisms of progress that were (at least at one time) partially constructed/controlled by humans the feel of prophetic/magical determinism, and I think that ASOIAF is most compelling and truly breaking new ground when he's operating in such a vein.

I think that fanfic would give the fandom a sense of humor, which would be nice (and it would be nice to have something to do between book breaks). Plus, in terms of vulgarity and violence, the canonical bar is already pretty low (high?), and there's a part of me that is quite curious to see how fandom would try and top the canon.

Do you ship Sansa w/the Hound (or at all)?

I have an account at the main forum for ASOIAF (asoiaf.westeros.org), but I haven't been there for the longest time because all of the topics are the same now (R+L=J and variants, WHO'S THE STRONGEST, etc). I totally agree with you that the fandom should loosen up. Unfortunately, I haven't found any good forums/sites for that type of interaction. I'm part of the LJ community, but it's pretty dead and I've never posted.
You're definitely right that fanfic would give the fandom the humor that it desperately needs. And while much of it would inevitably be badfic, some good stuff would crop up too simply because there is so much to work with in that world. Hell, I might be inspired to write stuff (haven't written fic for 4 years) and actually participate in the fandom of my favorite books. :|
Even though the sensible part of me tells me I'm being a hopeless romantic, I would have to say that I do ship Sansa with the Hound. I loved watching their interactions change and that last scene with them is probably one of my favorites in the series.
