101. I heart you! I know what you mean, too! Every now and again, something will remind me how friggen amazing a band they are. How they're all incredibly talented musicians with tight harmonies and clever, evocative lyrics, blink-and-you-miss-it wit who don't take themselves too seriously, know how to have fun, and have the best balance on all of their albums that I've heard. One time, it was just their remake of Disney's "Grim Grinning Ghosts"--it's just a joke, but it's still incredible.
And I'd love to try and get my friends to understand why I love that band so much, especially since their music is a lot more accesible to the average person than Great Big Sea (my favourite band)...and they just...don't get it. It's like "Oh, BareNaked Ladies? They did that 'One Week' song back in the nineties, right?" Well, yes, but they're not a nineties one-hit-wonder band, and however fun and catchy their radio hits are, the rest of their stuff blows it out of the water.

They're a great band. Don't fear your friends' judgement. Be bold. (My friends don't get it, but they don't mind it.)

106. Well, somebody beat me to it.

111. I don't see why you'd have to re-read the books in English. When we canon-thump, it tends to be because people get canon (ie: Draco is a clever little whiny brat without a spine) confused with fanon (ie: Draco is only a brat because he had such a horrible home life, he's secretly a mastermind of the highest caliber who runs away because he's smart, not scared, and just needs a hug. And also, evil is sexy). I think that the overall interpretation of the books, the characters, and the actions therein would be very much the same, regardless of the language. I mean, you'll have to write your app in English (sorry), but that doesn't seem to be a problem for you. Just make sure your canon answers aren't surface-level, be sure to let us know English isn't your first language, and do your best. Good luck!

112. Eh, I do both. I enjoy overanalyzing things, but there are times when I just like letting it go. It's just a truth that the average nerd is a nerd because we love nitpicking. Nothing wrong with not liking it. But I think the difference between really enjoying something and being in its fandom is simply that.

125. I think people find it hip to hate Joss Whedon. I mean, if you hate him, fine, that's cool. But it's this whole "OMIGOSH, WHY DOES EVERYONE LOVE HIM!!! I WISH THEY HATED HIM AS MUCH AS I DID!!!!!!!11!!" that pisses me off.
I don't find his jokes old. I found his writing, especially on Firefly to be clever, fun, and wacky, and there's plenty of lines that my friends and I still quote, years later. Heck, it's influenced the way I talk more than any other book or show I can think of off-hand.
He may kill characters because of the rush of power. Or he may do it because he feels like that's where his story should go. Personally, I still rage over him killing Wash--there was no reason to--but I don't hate him, and I certainly don't think he sucks, because I've very much liked everything of his I've seen.
Gosh. Sorry that the fact that I enjoy stuff annoys you.

128. Who is that artist? That's so familiar.

135. YES!!!! Oh man, yes! I totally channel Pearl when I feel the need to be loud and in charge.

148. I can't even fantasize about actors or celebrities who are married. The one time I did it, it involved the fantasy taking place ten years ago, before he was married. I didn't mind the idea of him and a then-girlfriend splitting up, but I still felt dirty all over because he and his wife seem just too sweet.

150. I'm inclined to agree. It's gotten to the point (and got ther awhile ago) where I'm not even annoyed or angry anymore. I just kind of stopped caring about her. She's still on my watch list, but I don't usually bother to even check. Not only is it more of the same, but she does have that attitude of...what, entitlement? Just leaves me feeling meph.

153. Well, considering that their "love" of each other is their only actual defining characteristic, I'd have to say that sounds about right.

128. Brian Lee O'Malley, he also did Scott Pilgrim. (the scan pictured is from his brilliant book "Lost at Sea")

The most recent time I saw them perform live, when "One Week" came up in the setlist, you could SMELL the "oh god we are so sick of this song let's just get it over with and play new stuff" emotion.

It just made me like them even more.

Heh. I can imagine. I remember feeling that vibe when I saw Blues Traveler do "Run Around" (which made me feel guilty, because I didn't know much of their stuff back then).

Honestly, if I saw them in concert and "One Week" got played, I'd be a little disappointed. I like it and all, but they have so many songs that are so so so much better.

On the other hand, it would mean I was actually seeing them in concert, which would be mind-blowingly fantastic (still kicking myself for missing their Ships and Dip cruise with all my favourite bands).

125. Lines don't sound "original" anymore when people quote them a billion times.

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-06-02 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
And that's...somehow Joss Whedon's fault? That he wrote quippy lines that ten years later, some people still remember with fondness? The lines were original, or at least funny, when they first aired.

Man, Monty Python's Holy Grail is so lame--no original lines at all.

I mean, if you hate him, fine, that's cool.

Don't-enjoy his stuff all you like. The only thing that bugs me is your being all "RARRR WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE IT?! I'M ANGERED BY PEOPLE LIKING IT; THEY SHOULD ALL BE SMART HATE IT LIKE ME!"
