Re: What was ruined for you because of the fanbase?

I've never had a piece of media ruined for me by fans, but I've had certain fandoms or fandom spaces ruined for me by fans. I will still go on liking that thing and probably still reading fic (if I ever did) and maybe still interacting within certain fannish spaces (such as cons, where it's somewhat harder to be shitty to people when you're face-to-face), but being cautious about that fandom in general.

Somehow, I've managed to avoid a lot of the really toxic stuff without even trying, so that's nice. The thing that tends to get me personally is when people get desperate to prove how big a fan they are and will jump on anyone who is new so they can prove how knowledgeable they are in comparison (which is weird when it comes to fandoms that have been around for decades and you can't assume someone who is new to a particular fandom space is new to the fandom, but whatever). I've had that happen to me and just thrown up my hands and backed out of that space. There's so much else out there, I'm not going to waste time fighting someone for the chance to kneel at their feet and partake of their wisdom.
