(It was a family thing - someone always gave my grandad the latest hardcover for Christmas and about ten of his descendants would read it before we went home and he got a chance at it.)

Oh, that's so cool! My mom was subscribed to the Reader's Digest abridged novels (you'd get four books in one), and I read a couple of his in those. And then I wanted to read *all* the story, so I started getting them from the library and/or the bookstore when I could. My mom and I have been fans for years.

I love his books so much! When i was a kid, it was the fact that his 'hero' was generally a jockey and there was always horse stuff going on that attracted me. Later, it was just the well-written, interesting stories, characters, lives and mysteries (and the horses).

Such an excellent writer! And such an interesting life.
