It seemed like early on they dressed Sherlock like kind of a dork (e.g. vests over plaid shirts) but his wardrobe evolved over time but fandom didn't catch up because the idea of Joan being better dressed was set in place.

I think they were trying for a more NYC hipster vibe at first with Sherlock. I didn't hate it, but I'm glad they've branched out a bit more with his wardrobe.
