Re: Help me design an ecosystem

If you are just going to clone things, I think you're going to have issues. As there is a reason farmers cycle crops. Only putting the same couple of things in a place is not great for the soil or the plants. If you were starting with basic simplistic stuff and having it evolve into different, more complex, things over the millennia, that's one thing. But just copy & pasting / cloning seems like it would lead to a lot of issues. Especially as you need a lot of plants to sustain herbivores.

Well the plants are going to be magically cloned too, to start with. It is a case of (and I'm simplifying a dozen pages of writing here) grabbing basically a few crabapple saplings (along with the other plants mentioned) out of the garden and shoving them into the magic matrix and it duplicates them to fill the space so there is instant forest, field, and plains of growth before hitting the magic make-time-go-faster button.

Okay, not instant forest, but one stand of trees and plants per acre or something like that. That is a bit more challenging, but the soil is still pre-provided by the magic, and it still leaves room to spread.

I think I understood that right. What I'm saying is, if you look at a "normal" forest, there are tons of different kinds of plant life. And they all help each other out and make each other better for it. Having a forest that is basically just crabapple trees seems like a recipe for disaster. (The field, which will have at least a few different kinds of plants might fare slightly better.)
