105. I like his work. I also don't like that it's trendy to hate on him.

108. Yeah, right. The creepy guys who want to hug and clomp, the yaoi fantards who want to slap me with giant paddles, the snotty cosplay elitists attacking other cosplayers because apparently dressing up like fictional characters is srs bsness, and some guy in a fursuit minding his own business is going to ruin my day? Yeah, right.

123. Wank whining is the wankiest of wank that ever wanked.

146. No, you're not a hypocrite at all.

157. You're fucking delusional if you think they'll ever write a character on house, especially a female character, who has anything other than faux strength. They made Amber break down and cry, made Cameron fall for House, made Thirteen whiny and subservient to House, and Cuddy has been degenerating past the point of no return since the beginning of season 3, even when it doesn't make any fucking sense (he took the birth control pills of a woman who wants a child, even though that too is an exceptionally stupid plotline). Don't get attached to these characters. The writers are bound to get bored and give them a crippling disease or have them go on a meth trip at random.

166. I hated it too, but I liked her.

[identity profile] kiwi-from-hell.livejournal.com 2008-06-02 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
They made Amber break down and cry

No one who ever cries is strong? Damn it, Wilson, House and Chase (and Foreman? I can't remember) are total pansies then.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-06-02 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Wilson, House, Chase and Foreman cried over losing loved ones and Amber cried because she didn't get the job. Yes, people can cry and still have strength, but did you honestly find it in character for her to just break down and cry because she lost something? She had kept her old job. She said earlier that she had backup if she didn't win. She wasn't crying because she was sad, she was crying because the writers wanted House to take her down a notch.

It's disgraceful.

[identity profile] cakemage.livejournal.com 2008-06-03 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Good to know that you can't be strong if you cry over losing a job you desperately wanted.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-06-03 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
How did you extract that from what I said?

She was crying because the writers made her cry. Not because it made sense for her as a character.

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-06-02 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
=\ Everyone on the show was created for House to take down a notch.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-06-02 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but the guys never fall madly in love with him or do strip teases or so on and so forth.

I do agree with you, there's a lot of bad writing that goes on with regards to the characters, but there's also a sexist slant to it.

[identity profile] kinneas.livejournal.com 2008-06-03 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Because House is sexist, and more importantly, objectifies women. As he's assumedly heterosexual, men can't really fill that role. Not that I'm saying this is a good thing and I condone it, but I can't speak to the prejudices of the writers themselves (though I certainly don't deny the possibility).

...And being gay, I just thought the Cuddy bit was hot as hell.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-06-03 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
There's a point where the writer seperates from the character, at least where bad writing is involved. You're never going to be able to rationalize away why we needed to bear witness to Cuddy stripping for House. It's a cheap, sleazy stunt that's meant to cast House as someone who objectifies women, just in case Wilson saying "OMG House, it appears that as of this season you objectify all women!" wasn't enough.

It also brings in the ratings.

This is probably going to come off as creepy, but I think you are so cool. I saw couple of the other comments you posted in regards to #157 and I couldn't agree more. I truly loathe how the women are portrayed on House. Cameron is probably the "strongest" (and that's saying a lot, considering the shitty plotlines the writers have come up with for her) and not-so-coincidentally, she is the most hated character on the series, although I suppose that's an entirely different argument. In any case, you're awesome for bringing this up. I never know what this community is talking about 95% of the time but it's comments like these that make me glad I always read the secrets and skim through the responses.

Re: 157

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-06-02 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not creepy at all, and thank you very much. I agree about Cameron, but I sympathize with the people who hate her because I'm still not over the meth incident.

Re: 157

[identity profile] takemeback.livejournal.com 2008-06-02 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
You're welcome. I feel dumb for asking this, but what is it about the meth incident that is so bothersome? Was it sleeping with Chase? Because I always interpreted that as him taking advantage of her -- or at the very least, he was as much to blame for that as she was. Would you mind clarifying? (It'll actually be really helpful for me because I'm planning to write a fic about Cameron for [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon that occurs during the HIV scare, so I'd love more ideas/opinions to tackle.)

Re: 157

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-06-02 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I just thought it was completely ridiculous and entirely out of character. I can't even begin to blame Chase because I'm far too busy blaming the writers. I think it's completely unrealistic that she'd be that receptive to the suggestion of a dying man because she might have HIV. Cameron is obsessed with ethics. Stealing crystal meth to get high and have stoned sex is not a realistic coping mechanism.

There are other things about the writing that have annoyed me but that really eclipses everything else. The only other thing I can remember is that I'm annoyed at how they keep dropping hints that she still loves House even though she's saying oh no, mean things to him.

Again, normally, I'd say that Chase took advantage of her, but instead I decided that the whole thing was stupid and didn't happen. It was the only way to enjoy the show.

Re: 157

[identity profile] takemeback.livejournal.com 2008-06-03 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I totally get that. I agree that it was very OOC and it completely shocked me. But I guess I see that as all the more reason not to sympathize with Cameron-bashers and not to hate her myself, because I (like you) recognize it as bad writing. I did, however, hate Chase for a long time after that, which in retrospect was probably unfair. It was, like you said, an all-around poorly-conceived storyline.

Re: 157

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-06-03 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't like Chase beforehand, so his part in the matter change much to me. Smarmy bastard.

I think the natural reaction to bad writing is shock and anger, but I do think it's forgiveable to misdirect that at a character in extreme cases like this. In a perfect word people would be more aware of bad writing even in series they like, but for most people if they like it then they assume that the writing is good and the writers know what they are doing.

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2008-06-02 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreeing with [livejournal.com profile] takemeback above. The way female characters (with the partial exception of Cameron...at least she's gotten to develop as a character and deliver some much-needed verbal and emotional bitchslaps to House) have been treated on this show is so damned frustrating.

Especially poor Cuddy, my God. Do the writers not realize how fucked-up and wrong it is to have the "boss who tries to maintain authority but is constantly taken down a peg by the more clever [and male] employee" be female? RARGH.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-06-02 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I figure they just don't care. It's not like it's even remotely believable anymore, either. Cuddy ought to be his foil, especially since he cares about his job - which was in jeapordy up until they point they decided that it was more fun to just have him sexually harass Cuddy constantly.

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2008-06-02 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, one of the reasons I stopped caring about the show (I haven't quite stopped watching it yet, because I am a masochist, but I probably will soon) is that they not only failed to question the "House is always right" fixture, but started taking it to stupid, aggravating extremes. And nowhere was it more blatant and painful than in his relationship with Cuddy.

But I was still skeeved to pieces by the striptease scene. Gross. (And just in case the sort of person who'd jump on me for saying that is reading: no, it's not the sex part that I find gross. I think Lisa Edelstein is gorgeous and totally wouldn't mind seeing her flaunt it if she wasn't doing so in such a creepy sexist context.) I used to get the impression that House sexually harassed Cuddy because he was an immature jerk who liked doing inappropriate things to get a rise out of people (see also: his racist behavior towards Foreman, which, unlike the sexist behavior towards Cuddy, tends to vanish in serious situations or inside his own head). Now it feels more like, hey, sexual harassment is funny and makes House look cool!

Sigh.

[identity profile] takemeback.livejournal.com 2008-06-03 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I am so with you on being completely grossed out by the striptease scene. I mean -- I just -- I can't even discuss it. The entire House/Cuddy dynamic pisses me off for how misogynistic it is, but that scene -- wow. There are no words to articulate how revolting it was. I don't think I've ever felt that uneasy watching a scene from House before.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-06-03 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I hope they just write her off the show before it gets any worse. It's the very least they could do for her.

[identity profile] takemeback.livejournal.com 2008-06-03 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly, I think that's the opposite of what TPTB has planned. :-/ I just wish they could remember who she actually was back in season 1. I really don't know how they'll pull off the House/Cuddy love story that is supposedly in the works... if those rumors are true. (The answer being that they probably won't realistically pull it off at all, and I'll probably give up on the show completely before it becomes too appalling to bear.)
