There's nothing wrong with enjoying Sondheim, ever! There's a huge difference between the relationships in Twilight and Passion - the latter was realized and portrayed as a 100% fucked-up relationship by the creators of the show, whereas Stephenie Meyer paints the Bella/Edward relationship as idealized, perfect love.

Juvenile writing style aside, I might actually enjoy Twilight somewhat if the author realized what an unhealthy relationship she'd put her main characters in - and roll with it. Of course, that would mean that Meyer would have to admit that Edward is not the perfect man, which'll never happen - and it still wouldn't help the pages upon pages of melodramatic descriptions of his heart-stopping, sparkly, dazzling beauty.

Well first off, this Bella girl sees Edward in school, falls MADLY IN LOVE(!!) with him, but he tells her to GET AWAY HE IS DANGEROUS (woe), and then proceeds to watch her. all the time. I've read it like once, but I'm pretty sure he like stalks her around school campus or something for about a month until for some stupid reason they get together, whereupon he reveals to her he -watches her in her sleep- and makes sure he knows where she is ALL THE TIME

and this is all played off like it's FOR LOVE and everything, keep in mind

-so over the course of the next book or books (I don't know they all run together) he continues to watch her sleep every night and tries to control who she is friends with (granted they're werewolves, but he's a vampire) and.

Yeah that. I don't know if it helped but =/

Pretty much what the anon poster said. Bella meets Edward, and within a couple of weeks of knowing each other she decides that she wants to become a vampire and be with him ~FOREVA~. Edward does many stalkerish things - yes, including watching Bella sleep through the entire night (which is also done, at first, without her knowledge and early in their relationship.) I haven't read past the first one, but from what I gather from my obsessed friends, they somehow get separated in the latter books? At any rate, when this happens, Bella puts herself constantly and continuously in dangerous situations that threaten her life because it allows her to her Edward's voice. Eddie, on the other hand, goes through some sort of long ordeal to try and kill himself. Also, apparently there's another guy that Bella likes, whom Edward goes out of his way to try and stop her from seeing. There's an insane power imbalance between the two, and even in the first book Bella refers to Edward as a 'god.' I don't see that as a particularly healthy mindset to have regarding a partner, especially one given to controlling tendencies.

It's not even so much the unhealthy relationship that bothers me - I like, and ship (within fiction alone, of course) relationships that make Edward and Bella look cute. The thing that bothers me is that the author presents this as more or less the paradigm of a perfect love - and that millions of teenage girls are lapping it up. I don't mind Twilight so much for the lulz, but to many of my RL friends it's srs bizness and they desire a relationship like the one in the book. That bothers me.
