That is, I can't even find the TOS.

A lurker on the chat server

(Anonymous) 2017-07-12 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Well they haven't written the official TOS but they've made it clear on their tumblr page that they will not tolerate people being harassed and will try to avoid making moral calls on what to ban and get rid of. Obviously they don't allow like actual pedo shit and stuff but they are very discerning in investigating reports so it won't be as easy to false report.

A lot of tumblr seems to be rather upset about how they say they're not going to ban someone until they, you know actually break the rules. And they're not going to let you go around warning people about someone you had a tiff with.

To some people this seems to translate to "they will be a haven for nazis and abusers"

Tumblr hardly bans people anyway, why would those people bother moving besides simple troll factor. Much less work just to stay where you are.

I haven't read the actual TOS or the debates that are informing this particular controversy, so I want to be clear about that straight away.

That said: I completely and 100% agree with the general concern and the criticism as you've presented it here. I think one of the major lessons of the Internet is that you have to be forthright and intentional about the policies you're setting, and the rules and norms you're promulgating, and the structures you'll create, and how that influences the interactions and content on the website. Not doing so is a massive abdication of responsibility.

It should be clear to anyone on the Internet that doing these things is hard, and that failing at them leads to dysfunctional communities and awful outcomes. It should be clear to anyone on the Internet that, in fact, have a community without rules DOES run a serious risk of becoming a haven for nazis and abusers. How many times does that have to happen before we recognize that this is, in fact, the case? I mean, this is the exact thing that cbrarachynos always bangs on about with regards to Tumblr, and rightly so: the reason that Tumblr is dysfunctional in the first place is because of the poor structures that underlie interaction on the platform.

If this site wants to have an open-door policy for content, that's their prerogative. But there's a very high chance that it will lead to the promotion of morally repugnant content, and they have to acknowledge that. And it's entirely on-board in my opinion to criticize them for that and to choose not to use services that replicate dysfunctional structures.

well from what I've gathered following them they seem to intend on cracking down on things that are harmful or encouraging harm to others. Wishing harm or death on a group of people or encouraging hatred against them? Against the rules. harassment toward people who criticize a racist thing posted on someone's blog? Against the rules. Posting unflagged NSFW content where minors could find it? Against thee rules. Posting actual pedophilic content/CP? Against the rules.

I mean I get your worry but it seems like the rules as they've expressed and described cover a lot of the morally repungent content here.

Yeah sounds like they are going to try and keep from another Zamii070 incident from happening which is a good thing and the only ones who have a problem with what they are trying to set up are the ones that are upset they can't bully in the name of social justice... same lil shits that have a problem with A03 for the same reason.

For those of us who don't do Tumblr, what is the Zamii070 incident?

TW: Harrassment, Attempted Suicide.

.

Re: TW: Harrassment, Attempted Suicide.

Zami070 was the fanartist that attempted suicide after being harrassed for drawing fat characters skinny, racially ambiguous characters as white, and Fluttershy in a Native costume.

'morally repugnant'

If you're going to be mad about them allowing incest ships, then just don't use the site. It's not that hard.

I'm responding at least as much to anon's characterization of the site and their comments about the underlying ideas as to the existence of the site.

So basically, it's another AO3 and this current generation of fandom brats are pissed because they can't
bully people they hate off the site.

Got it.
