Would You Read Fic For A Pairing You Hate?

Not just background, but the focal point of the fic?

Because I recently finished a romance fic and I've gotten multiple comments along the lines of "Love your fic, hate the pairing." ....why would you even click? I mean sure I've spite clicked a few fics but I never commented to tell them I was spite clicking.

Fuck no. I barely ever even read fic that has a pairing I dislike as a side/background pairing.

The only circumstance I can see it happening is if it was an author that I reallllllllly loved. Then I would probably grumble about it but end up reading it - but I probably wouldn't comment to say so. Outside of that specific scenario? Definitely not.

Nope, hell if I hate a pairing enough I won't touch fic that has it as a side-pairing with a ten foot pole. But I definitely wouldn't bother if it was the focal point.

I could maybe understand if they were really desperate to read a certain trope in the fic and their love of the trope outweighed their hate of the pairing.

Nope. There's a specific trope I really love and is somewhat hard to find, and there's a certain fandom that actually has a decent amount of it, but it's all for a pairing I hate (one half of my OTP with a character I really dislike) and even though it involves the rare trope I love, it isn't enough to make me read it with that pairing.

I've definitely done it in the past, but I can't quite remember why. Probably it was a friend who wrote it. In that case I definitely would have commented on the crafting of the story, and the author would already have known how I felt about the ship.

It would depend on why I hated the pairing I guess? I mean if it was just that it was really common and I was sick of it, I might give a fic a chance.

But I don't like saying "hate the pairing." Sometimes I've said "I don't usually read this pairing," which is probably saying the same thing really but sounds nicer to me.

I can't think of any pairing I actually hate. I would absolutely read one I'm indifferent to if the summary intrigued me enough. I might read one that I disliked if I thought the author was really good.

OP - Thanks everyone for making me feel a little better about side-eyeing those comments. They're not friends or anyone I know, just random people commenting that they like the fic but hate the pairing. Maybe they're trying to neg me into writing a pairing they do like?

It's basically the otherfandom equivalent of Rey/Hux and most of the commenters seem to be Reylo and Kylux fans.
