I agree with your thoughts on Clara 100%. I didn't care about her initially but she was also just a plot point/mystery for 11 to solve and not a character in her own right. About all 11 did with her was either flirt or wonder who she was.

But with 12 she became more of a person and Capaldi and Coleman really played off her well. There were still missteps in the writing but I never found Clara overly unlikable, sometimes she made questionable decisions but none of them were considerably worse then anything other companions in the past have done.
