When the person talks to their muses, and treats them like real people, and it seems like it's borderline DID. It spooks me right to hell.

"Muses" is in quotes because there's a line between the "inspiration" muse, and the "voice inside the head" muse.

Completely different.

Maybe I should've been clearer, it's more common with people who already have a mental illness, or may be a sign of mental illness. Not all do have both "muses" and mental illness.

Where did I say "Because you have MUSES you have a MENTAL ILLNESS"?

Because I'm honestly quite confused.

Should I have said: "I knew a person who had DID (amongst other things, I'm not sure because I'm not a doctor) and one way of expressing her DID was through 'muses' and I've seen similar associations and behaviors enough times in fandom to be a little skeptical"?

Fandom is full of playful strangeness. That makes it hard sometimes to work out if someone is kidding, role-playing, stretching a metaphor, being embarrassingly pretentious, describing a spiritual experience, or is actually nuts. :-)

that's not anything even remotely resembling DID (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dissociative_identity_disorder). playing internet psychologist = never a good idea.
