What is something you judge people for buying?

Super expensive purses or clothing. Like several hundred dollars+ for one item.

Where's the line in how much is too much? I've spent ~$120 on purses before.

Same. I actually own a Coach purse (genuine, I got it authenticated) that I got for about $20 in a thrift store and quality-wise it isn't any better than the Liz Claiborne purse that I got on sale for about $15. I've been using the Liz Claiborne one for over ten years now and it's still holding up just fine - the Coach one started flaking off the metallic coating on the leather handle after about a year.

Depends on how much they make. Some people have such high incomes, I'd honestly think spending a mere several hundred dollars on an item is them being thrifty.

To me this depends on the quality of the item. Like, I'll judge someone for buying a $500 t-shirt because it's, like, a t-shirt. How good can it possibly be?

But if it's an item where there's a noticeable difference between price points, nah, not at all.

Like, my regular coat was $100+, my foul weather coat was $300. I looked at cheaper ones, but if I'm going to buy something I want it to last for years, be warm AND waterproof, fit properly, look attractive, and be versatile. Everything cheaper was a trade-off. Warm but not waterproof, or looked nice but had super cheap construction, or whatever.

Expensive clothing and bags also often have lifetime warranties, which is AWESOME. When the hood zipper broke on my rain gear three years after I bought it, I just had to go to the nearest Bass Pro Shops and they gave me a brand new coat, no questions asked. That's worth a hell of a lot to me.

Same. Maybe if that's your only purse and it's going to last for 20+ years, but people who spend that kind of money on a designer purse rarely have just one.

I get a lot of my games on sale, but I pre-order some things. It has to meet a couple different criteria, though.

-It's a project or developer I want to support for their design philosophy, moral choices, general quality, creative vision, etc. (Bethesda, Stoic, Arkane, Telltale, Bioware, etc.)
-I have confidence that I'll enjoy the game even if it's buggy (TES) or has a troubled launch (ME:A)
-I want to participate in the initial fandom hype rather than coming in weeks or months after the party has ended
-that sweet, sweet pre-order bonus loot

Re: What is something you judge people for buying?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-18 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I usually don't pre-order too in advance because I don't care about extras and so many companies change the release date that I'd rather be sure when something is coming out so I know I have the cash.

I only preorder if it's a preorder sale so it's discounted, but even then I usually don't like buying a game too in advance.

NGL i've thought of buying one before. I sleep better when I'm hugging a pillow, so why not hug a pillow with my favorite character on it?

Clothing that's expensive just because of the brand. Especially kid's clothing that's just expensive because of the brand. Your toddler does not need a $60 Nike hoodie.

I will never understand buying super expensive clothes for little kids. Especially babies. They're just gonna shit and puke on it.

Brand new phones when the old phone works just fine. I have a friend who buys the new iPhone whenever it comes out and it seems rather wasteful to me, but hey, it's her money and she can afford it, so whatevs.

I don't really judge so much as cry when people spend thousands of dollars in a really short amount of time, and it could be on almost anything.

Like when people spend in a month what I could live on for a year it makes me cry/wish they would send me a gift of money.

I work in retail and I don't necessarily judge what people buy (though even though we sell them I can NOT understand the appeal of sweaters/shirts that have the stores logo on them, ala GAP, Aeropostle, etc) but how much. I just. When people spend 500 dollars on sweatshirts... why.

Giant, fancy, gas-guzzling pickup trucks so big they practically take up two parking spaces.

Firearms beyond, like, one shotgun and I guess maybe one handgun. I mean, I'm Canadian an think US gun laws are insane, so a big part of me wants to say anything more than a shotgun if you hunt or live out of town is weird and off-putting. But it seems like in the States practically everyone owns a handgun, so I guess it must be pretty normalized.
