In the states at least, I think it's definitely an "whatever way you wanna say it" kind of word.

I grew up saying jy-ro, but I worked in the Greek restaurant that introduced me to them in the first place, and I think the actual proper pronunciation is yee-ro. That said, it always threw me off when I had customers come in and order, what sounded to my ears, like a "hero."

I've heard jeer-oh, jy-roh, hero, yeer-oh. I just try not to order it.
