Tension headache treatment

[personal profile] philstar22 2017-07-19 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone have any non-drug related treatment ideas for a tension headache? I've taken Tylenol, Naproxen, and Tramadol. They took the edge off, but that's it. I've had a heating pad on my neck, and that is helping, but only when I have it on, and I can't exactly go to sleep with a heating pad turned on.

For me, it helps to have ice packs on my forehead and eyes, but like with heating pads, one can't exactly fall asleep with ice packs on their face.

If you haven't been drinking much water, drink some water. Sometimes coffee helps.

Gentle neck-stretches and a quiet walk?

I've found laying down flat in a dark quiet room, ice pack on my head/forehead/eyes and just laying quietly for a while is the best.

Sometimes using a massager (I have one that's like a little rolly ball, idk how to explain it) on my neck and shoulders helps me

Usually massages around the neck and shoulder area help a lot. Maybe check if said headaches are product of a Cervical Muscle Spasm. In case they are then taking something to relax your muscles along with heat usually helps a lot.

Salonpas patches. I've sometimes had a bunch on the back of my neck and behind my ears.

For headaches, cooler tends to work better for me (heat for muscle and joint aches), so a cool, damp cloth on the forehead or over the eyes.

Lying down in a dark room with a down pillow over my head can help - down because it's light and doesn't feel smothering and it helps block out any ambient light and some sound.

There are some acupressure points. I don't know if that kind of thing works for you or not. http://health.howstuffworks.com/diseases-conditions/pain/nerve/how-to-find-pressure-points.htm

Heat never helps my headaches, only cold. I drape washcloths soaked in cold water over my eyes and forehead, sometimes the back of neck and my jaw near my ears. I drink cold water and hold it in my mouth for a short while so the cold numbs the nerves in my gums and hopefully sends it up towards my head (because I can't afford a custom-made molded mouthpiece to put in the freezer specifically for situations like this).

For me, cold helps for migraines, but heat helps for sinus and tension headaches.

Magnesium. As a supplement, it can help prevent headaches, but when you've got one, if you have a liquid form of magnesium and can rub it on the pain areas, it can help.
