(Anonymous) 2017-07-19 05:17 am (UTC)(link)In the first episode, 16 year old J's (his name is Josh, but everyone just calls him J) mom dies of a drug overdose, and never having known his dad, he goes to live with his maternal grandma. His mom's four brothers don't technically live with the grandma, but they're always hanging around. J quickly learns about the family's criminal activity and gets pulled into it. Grandma Janine, who everyone calls Smurf, is the ringleader and the four boys pretty much do whatever she tells them to. One of the brothers, Pope (his real name is Andrew...most of the characters have a nickname on this show) has just recently gotten out of prison and is trying to fit back into the family.
There's a lot of action stuff with the family planning out different robberies and various criminal jobs, and then different side stories with the various characters' personal lives. The plot's fine, pretty typical action movie type stuff, but it's the characters and their dynamics that are the most interesting to me.
The mom/grandma is...let's just say a real piece of work, and she's kind of the puppet master who's behind everything. She manipulates the boys, all of which she has a very creepy relationship with, and the relationships of the brothers with each other is essentially based around the way she plays them against each other to control them. It's incredibly dysfunctional and just super fucked up, but really interesting if you like fucked up family dynamics.
Also, there's a crapload of incest subtext, mainly of the Oedipal variety (that's one more thing she uses to control the boys), but also some between the siblings. It's hard to elaborate without getting into spoiler territory, but nothing explicit has happened on screen (there've been a couple uncomfortable/creepy scenes along those lines, but nothing graphic), although it's been heavily implied that it has in the past, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if it did in the future. (Just wanted to mention this in case it's the kind of thing that bothers you.)
It gets pretty dark towards the end of the first season, and none of the characters are good people. They've all done awful things, the show is full of violence and criminal activity (there's also a good amount of decently graphic sex scenes and drug use). It's not by any means a "happy" show (I wouldn't be at all surprised if it ends with the entire family dying or in prison) but if you like dysfunctional families, the characters and relationships are super interesting.
There's more I could say but I don't want to get too spoilery. Let me know if you have any questions, though!

(Anonymous) 2017-07-19 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)wow. that show sounds even more fucked up than I expected it to be (in terms of dynamics). It sounds character driven...interesting!
I'll definitely check it out, or at least the first episode and see how I feel. I'm currently on if "happy" shows, but once that's over I'll check it out! Do you usually go anywhere to discuss it?
