I'm kind of skeptical how many people believe that Sirius was actually textually canonically gay, and how much of this is actually just hyperbole about the extent to which the text supports a gay reading of Sirius.

And TBH im not even that into the character but talking about the gay reading of Sirius seems approximately one million times more interesting than litigating canonicity

I'm usually skeptical of these claims but I've come across people outside of fandom that I happened to start talking Harry Potter with who ended up saying this, and I'm confused every time. I get how Sirius/Remus is plausible. I don't get how it's practically canon.

I kind of wish people would get off the "canon" wagon all together and just argued for alternative creative reads of work. It's likely a reason for my current policy. The only good ship is a crack ship.

TBH: I suspect one driver for this is wishful thinking and a desire to reward one's favorite author with representation cookies. And I get annoyed at being asked to give millionaires cookies for subtextual ambiguity when authors who write obvious same-sex crushes are asked not to talk about it in book talks.

I agree, if for no other reason than "This interpretation, and no other!" thinking always pisses me off.

When the Church did it it led to people being burned alive and tortured to death for heresy. When fandom does it... well, really, aside for being virtual, it's not much different.

Oh ffs that's just absurd

I can understand people thinking Sirius may have been canonically gay, but I thought people gave up on thinking Lupin/Sirius was canon when Rowling released that write up confirming Tonks was the only person Lupin ever loved.

I suspect I'm gonna regret coming in to say this, but as a bastard obsessed with being right, I want to say there *is* one fairly tiny clue to Sirius's sexuality, which is that his old room is stated to be plastered with photos of girls in bikinis.

I won't say that that is the absolute statement on Sirius's sexuality, that can be easily argued against. I'm just saying you're wrong about the no canon proof of him being sexually anything.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-21 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, I could have sworn there was a suggestion of attraction to women at some point, but I couldn't remember what it was.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-21 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I genuinely don't think that's evidence either way

I would say teens half pick posters they'd want others to see and sure half could be him liking those. Can't say I remember him coming off as anything sexuality or romance wise but I didn't like him at all.

I want to say Harry has a suspicion in the books that Sirius put up those photos to piss off his parents (muggle pics), but I don't have the book right here.

But since that was probably more about them being muggle photos, he could have put up car or sports posters just as well, so I doubt he had them up entirely for his parents' benefit.

Or maybe he was bearding. Whatthefuckever.

I will take that as proof that he may have been bi or pan.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-21 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that was also to annoy his mother and I don't think there would have been many photos of scantily-clad Muggle men available to him at the time.

That's an interesting tidbit I didn't remember from the books! I will say it's not definitive, though. Anecdotes =/= data but one of my good male friends had bikini posters in his room all through middle/high school, and came out as gay by senior year. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I enjoy Remus/Sirius but if I was digging for supposed canon gay feelings it would have much more to do with James than with Remus. He was very into James.

This.

Definitely would pick James if had to chose.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-21 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. I could very much believe Sirius was in love with James. In their youth, Sirius and James were the closest. I got the vibe that Lupin was both of their friends equally and Lupin might have even been a bit closer to James.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-21 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically. I was really surprised to find out that lots of people think Sirius was canonically in love with Remus (not to be confused with just shipping them!), cause when I read the books I was half sure he was in love with JAMES instead. His whole character basically revolved around James (even Harry was "just" James' son).

Yeah, I really don't understand the mindset that has people yelling "It's canon!" over their ship. I guess my mindset comes from being a long-term non-canon shipper and feeling safe in the idea that I am not so beholden to canon in my shipping. I do feel similar about canon game-romances because they are variable, which may explain my earliest shipping, which was Baldur's Gate.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-21 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Late to the party, but I always thought Sirius was asexual.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-21 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, too true. It's so obviously canon that Sirius was in love with James, not Remus!
