Holy crap, nonny, what a coinky-dink, as this past weekend I had the BEST GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH I'VE EVER EATEN IN. MY. LIFE. Let me tell you all about it: it was at the Wharf House Restaurant in Capitola, California, which is a restaurant on the Capitola pier in Monterrey Bay. Kinda touristy, kinda local-y, they do mostly seafood with breakfast and sandwiches and have an upstairs outdoor patio with live music on the weekends. Nice place for a drink and a nosh. Anyway. The bread was two large but thin slices of typical San Francisco sourdough, buttered lightly and grilled to absolute crispy, not in the least bit greasy, perfection, with no trace of sogginess or squishiness at all. Perfect crunch when I bit into it, every bite until I finished it. Oh man! Between the bread slices, very generous portions of both cheddar and Jack cheeses, melted to gooey goodness, just hot enough but not so hot that it burns your taste buds off! Good, quality cheese that melts well and is, again, not greasy in the least. And nestled in this melty, cheesy, gooey goodness, are slices of red, ripe, delicious Roma tomatoes, in season and so flavorful and delicious! I cannot stress how much I hate mealy, flavorless tomatoes, nonny, but THESE WERE THE POLAR OPPOSITE, it was like a crispy bread, melty cheese, tomatoey party in my mouth! And this sandwich was served with a very generous helping of fresh-made French fries that were crispy and golden on the outside, creamy and piping hot inside, perfectly salted and absolute divinity with the cool ketchup (although they didn't really need it). I had this with a basic pinot grigio, it was heaven. Omg, nonny, if you're ever in Capitola, GO THERE AND GET YOU ONE OF THESE SANDWICHES. I'm not really a person who orders grilled cheese sandwiches in restaurants, but I would definitely order this again, I think I would make a special trip to this restaurant just for this sandwich!
