What show are you currently watching but not all that into?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-22 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
This question was inspired by The Mist. Five episodes in and it's still pretty 'meh'. I will still continue watching for Alyssa Sutherland tho.

Deathnote. Some people told me I might like it and I am watching in preparation for the movie. But eh.

I love the manga but I couldn't watch the anime. I just don't think they changed enough for it to work in that medium. Half the time you might as well still be looking at comic panels for all the movement happening on screen.

I don't know if that's your problem though. You might just not like the story.

Re: What show are you currently watching but not all that into?

It may not have had a lot of movement, but it did have a kickass soundtrack!

I appreciated that the anime was pretty identical to the manga. It's been a long time since I've seen it but I remember loving it. But I guess it's a story that basically develops via talking, since it's psychological and about people plotting against one another. I don't think series should be obligated to have action sequences or whatever just to stir things visually. But on the other hand, I can see how if you're not interested in watching L and Light talk about the smart things they are doing, the series will be boring as fuck.

Oh I'm fine with people sitting around talking. I'm not sure why I came across as wanting action sequences; I get bored with a lot more of those than conversational scenes. I just think there are more interesting ways to show those scenes that take advantage of the change in medium.

This is exactly how I felt about it. Loved the manga, but then I went to watch the anime and was like... this is exactly the same thing I just read, only slower. I mean, I'm sure part of that is personal preference, since I'm someone who'd rather absorb information visually rather than aurally, but it just didn't grab me like the manga did.

LOL I am doing the same right now. Well not in prep for the movie (the movie looks awful) but just because the movie reminded me I never finished Death Note.

It's not even that long of an anime and I feel like it's really slow and I am remembering why I never finished.

BTW if anyone has good anime recs I am looking for some new stuff to watch.

I could never get into it tbh. I had some friends years ago sell it to me as 'the greatest anime ever' but I found it horribly slow and tedious.

Part of me wants to watch the Netflix show just to see what it's like but I also really don't care that much. Might just youtube the interesting bits.

Re: What show are you currently watching but not all that into?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-22 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
If you're talking about the netflix movie the good news is it will be a much shorter adaptation.

The bad news is it's nothing like the original anime or manga and all the reviews have been consistent in saying so. Even the short clip I saw made it seem nothing like the anime.

I watched a short clip with the death-god thing in it, and that dude looked funky but I can't say I was taken in by the actual human dude.

Hence why I'll probably just stick to youtube rather than watch it all, even two hours seems like it might be too much for me.

And yeah I've seen the complaints about it straying really far from the source material so I can get people's ire if it's really missing the point(can't speak on that myself though as I never watched or read the original DN to know anything about it other than 'has weird death-gods' and that people get murdered by their names being put in a book).

I'm not even much of a fan of Death note but some of the changes they made do seem to miss the point of the story and characters. I think they took out some of the positive aspects that I liked.

The main thing I am curious about is Dafoe as Ryuk (the death-god thing) and I've heard positive reviews for his voice work in the role. I may watch it if I get bored enough but it may also be one of those movies I turn on and then immediately turn off.

Re: What show are you currently watching but not all that into?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-22 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but long-time Death Note fan, and Dafoe as Ryuk is like, as perfect as Robbin Williams as the Genie. Match made in heaven type role.

Everyone else just boggles me a little. They don't seem like they are even trying to recreate the manga characters, just loosely have a cast with similar names.

Re: What show are you currently watching but not all that into?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-22 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
SA Yeah I definitely think Dafoe works, even in the short clip that was ooc I was like "Okay, that is definitely Ryuk."

Light and L are the problems and I have seen some negative reviews for them, or even people who were fine with them acknowledged how different they are. Light in particular seems a bit WTF to me. He's supposed to be good looking and charming and able to fool others with his looks and intelligence, and IDK what was up with that clip having Ryuk push him to use the death note?

To me you shouldn't even name them Light and L if you're going to change so much.

Aha that's it's name, thanks. :)

And yeah Dafoe doing voice-work for him is what has my interest the most because I liked what I heard of that, I also liked how eerie he looked in the shadows with his eyes glowing out from the dark.

Yeah the way they made Ryuk look works. I think they just put all their effort for the film into Ryuk and no one else lol.

Dark Matter. It's all right. I like a couple characters, some have surprised me, outer space is neat.

I have no time to watch things I'm not into. I haven't even really started any new shows. I'm mostly just rewatching favorites. I have a list of things to start after the Bar like American Gods, Handmaids tale (okay, I watched the pilot and enjoyed it, but haven't watched any of the rest), Class (also have only seen the pilot), and The Mist.

Murdoch Mysteries is the "we don't have energy for anything else" show. Also wrapping up Star Trek: Voyager.

Have you seen the three original extended episodes, released in 2004, with Peter Outerbridge as Murdoch? I really liked those. I've never been able to get into the show with Yannick Bisson though.

Just today I finished S1 of Riverdale. It was...kind of fun to watch, I guess? Mainly I think I kept watching because of the look of the show, which is, IMO, it's strongest element. And I'm not gonna lie, I really love Jughead. I found most of the writing pretty terrible though.

Jughead is the best.

Riverdale.

I tried watching the first three episodes in...idk, February or March when I had them on my DVR. They didn't hook me & I ended up deleting the others, waiting for it to hit Netflix, which it did in May.

So at the end of May, I started over again. I've now seen the first three episodes twice and episodes 4 and 5. I want so badly to like it because other people with whom I have similar interests really seem to love it for the campy teen drama it is, but...it's so derivative? It brings nothing new to the table for me. I've taken a long break from it (long enough to start three new series and finish one) and I keep telling myself I'll go back to it, but idk, man.

I'm mostly only here for Luke Perry, Madchen Amick, Marisol Nichols, Josie & the Pussycats, and the promise/rumor that they're gonna bring magic & Sabrina the Teenage Witch to the series in season 2.

*Whispers* Voltron.

I haven't seen S2 yet aside from the garbage buddies preview with Pidge. Also it seems they'll be focusing a lot on Keith and I don't particularly care much about Keith, so I'm on the fence on whether I should drop it or not.
