OhoHO. I like what I'm reading. I really, really like what I'm reading here. Personally, I must admit I haven't really been thinking that deep regarding Naruto for quite some time now. I've mentioned this elsewhere, but the Uchihas are NOT why I'm reading Naruto. I got into it becuase of a wide, varied cast, and the exclusion of these characters and the focus on the Uchihas has made me direct less and less brainpower towards it. But this is still interesting and thoughtful stuff, and I do hope that it is what Kishimoto intends to reveal as well.

I mean... is it really that bad to let him be crazy? I know that the butthurt fangirls who wants their ultrakawaii chibisugoi Itachi-chan husbando to always be a detached and handsome man who never ever makes retarded faces because he FEELS like making retarded faces, but for once I hope Kishi ignores them and focuses on US. The sane fans. The ones who don't want to throw out years of belief and characterization for... sparkly peaceful jesus-Itachi.

Thank you. ♥ I have to admit that the Uchiha intrigue me the most in Naruto, so I tend to do a lot of meta about them.

I wrote a lot about krazeeface Itachi too and just. I don't think Itachi should be portrayed as out-and-out batshit. Rather, I like the idea that his upbringing itself contributed to the fact that he doesn't share the same moral code as others. So he wouldn't be crazy, necessarily, just completely amoral. And the fault would largely lie in Konoha's lap for training children to be killers from the age of four WTF.

Saint Itachi makes me just as :/ as Evil Itachi. Why couldn't Kishi have struck a realistic balance to have Itachi come out of it totally flawed and totally human?

Nah, I agree that just plain insane Itachi isn't really the best way to go narratively (even though it makes my Uchiha-weary heart smile a bitter schadenfreude infused smile to think about it), but twisted, damaged, unhinged Itachi who, as you say, has been trained to kill since the age of four so of COURSE he's gonna be strange in the head, THAT is the Itachi I wouldn't mind. A man doomed from the start by his own brilliance, who'se talent only gave him pain and trauma. That I can find interesting to read about.

And the answer to that question is either that he has and we just don't know it, or that he hasn't because all that moral grey isn't interesting him any longer. The man who gave us Zabusa has perhaps just stopped caring at this point and is just making it up as he goes along.

Wait, wait, wait.

Who do you think Kishimoto is listening to? No, really, do you really think that a Japanese man, creating a manga for a young, male Japanese predominantly male audience is going to be listening to the fangirls? Do you really think he's tailoring any part of his story to his Western fanbase at all? I mean, seriously?

And who do you think is butthurt here?

Hi, I'd like to introduce you to reality. I don't think you've met. In reality, Kishimoto is not writing this for any of us, and if we are, it's a vastly secondary thought. He's writing this for, you know, his primary target audience, which last time I checked was preteen Japanese boys. Also last time I checked, he's not just magically pulling stacks of manga out of his ass to distribute himself--everything he's doing would need to be approved by his publisher, who might be somewhat concerned with foreign distribution, but aren't going to do anything to jeopardized their core, target demographic, and I would bet money that I don't have that if they thought that their author was trying to appeal to some crazy girls on the other side of the world (who probably won't even buy the import because so many of them just snag it off the internet anyway), they would put that down so hard, so fast, it would make Ethni the anthropomorphic personification of Ethnocentricity's head spin.

Or maybe I'm wrong, and you think that wanting a sparkly Jesus Itachi husband all for your own is a popular fantasy among twelve year old Japanese boys?

Hmm. Yeah, you make a pretty good point. Truth to be told... I am kinda butthurt by later Naruto. The fact that so few of the teams get any kind of spotlight these days when they captured my heart so long ago HAS left me kinda bitter towards the series as whole, and when I'm bitter I don't really think very much before I unleash bile upon the series.

Now that you point it out, of course it makes sense that Kishimoto writes for that target audience, and I've most likely let the parts of fandom that I know of influence me thinking here. Even though you'd think that writing for preteens one wouldn't create anything as scary as Orochimaru. Man gives ME badtouching bad dreams. But even so, I can't help but to feel that somehow, what is going on with Itachi IS pandering in some way, perhaps not to the fangirl audience, but to some kind of audience that just... can't handle Itachi as a true villain. Perhaps it's just Kishimoto himself who is so in love with Itachi he wants him to be everything that is sugary good and rosey gumdrops, but I feel that right now, Itachi isn't a consistent character. He's someone who has had his personality as we know itm changed to suit SOMEONE'S needs, and that never sits right with me.

If that's how it feels to you, I won't try to convince you he's not pandering. I feel differently, but that's just an impression. I also disagree that Itachi's gone to sugar and gumdrops. His motivations are heroic, and his sacrifices are borderline messianic, but his actions are still pretty psychotic bastard. He's still killed people. He's still manipulated people. (In fact, it seems like he's STILL manipulating people.) He still mindfucked his little brother, so that Sasuke would have the life Itachi thought was best for him. That's not exactly skipping through fields, picking daisies and painting rainbows on ponies.

However, I can pragmatically say that this development isn't ending the series anytime soon, and publishers tend to like it when cash cows run until they're completely dried up. It's also not going to make it so there's any fewer big ninja battles between Sasuke and Naruto, which I tend to think isn't exactly scaring off the twelve year old boys.
