But my issue isn't really with the Donna-lite episode. It's the fact that she's been shunted aside for so much of this season leading up to it, and thus having a Donna-lite episode after that sort of irks me. The first three episodes are Donna-tastic and it's great. Martha returns and she doesn't take much screentime away from her (Donna is fantastic in the Sontaran eps) but it's the start of something (I was extremely excited for Martha's appearance but I didn't really like how she was handled. In the end her reappearance didn't really serve much point, and why bring her back just to have her get kidnapped in all of her episodes?). By Doctor's Daughter she's sharing screentime with TWO other lead female characters and she spends most of Silence in the Library standing around doing nothing while River Song takes over. Worse, she's out of commission for at least a large chunk of the next episode so it seems she'll be in that one even less.
I don't mind the companionpalooza at the end of the series in the finale. Rose, Martha, Sarah Jane, Jack, Mickey, etc will all be there and I'm quite excited about it. I think it's appropriate for RTD to bring back all of his characters (well SJS isn't his, but yah) for his big sendoff from being head of the show. But I've just really noticed a pattern of shunting Donna aside throughout the mid to current episodes of this season. Martha and Rose definitely had to share screentime with one off characters (and Mickey and her family, in Rose's case), but I never really felt like they were shoved aside. I'm getting that from Donna and it frustrates me a bit because I think she is amazing.
