Sure, if you are a shit writer it may make the story harder to understand. But then, if you are a shit writer you got other problems.

+1. It's the skill of the writer that's the problem in that instance.

the problems are in the words and sentence structure. a good writer can accomodate those problems, but the issues are present even if you write around them. having referential language increases cognitive load.
