I'm home alone and scared out of my mind

(Anonymous) 2017-07-23 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
The door was unlocked when I got back because I forgot to lock and it's in a suburban neighborhood with zero crime but I'm freaking out over the possibility that someone else might be in the house and afraid of leaving my room even though there's no signs of anything. Any old sound puts me pins and needles.

What do I do? I don't have pets and it's a large house.

Maybe you can call some friends over to kinda help you make sure no one snuck in? Or the cops if you're feeling paranoid.

After they shot that Australian woman dead for basically doing the same thing?!

If there's no sign of anything you're probably good. But stay by a phone and stay in your room with your door locked, don't investigate any noises.

If there's a friend you can call or talk to online I would do that just to help calm your anxiety.

I wish I had more advice and I'm sure it'll probably be scary for the time being, forgetting to lock the door happens to the best of us so just do what you need to do to keep yourself calm but also stay safe!

Ugh, I sympathize. Sometimes you can't stop the anxiety, no matter how irrational you know it is.

Can you call someone? By which I mean, call a friend or family member. Tell them what's going on. Then, if you think you're up to it, keep them on the line and keep talking, loudly, while you go check your house. Maybe having another voice on the line who you know can immediately get help will help make things feel less dangerous.

Or maybe (if it's not too late at night and the person you call lives in your area) you could ask them to come over and help you check the house. Safety in numbers. Yeah, it's probably for nothing, but if you're close with the person you call, they'll most likely understand.

And if neither of those is an option, maybe just talking to someone will make you feel better and help reassure you that the house is safe.

I hope you can relax soon.

Thanks the advice. It's sound and all but I'm still scared and haven't been able to fall asleep. I tried texting a friend but she's evidently asleep and I feel bad waking her. Looks like I'll have to rough the night and wait until morning. I'm too embarrassed to call anyone else. Thanks though.

I'm sorry OP, just do whatever you can to keep your mind occupied. Play some video games or watch some tv; nothing scary or depressing but something light. If you use any chat programs keep those open in case someone you can chat with wakes up.

It sucks to be anxious about something late at night I'm sorry.
