The thing that helped me the most was outlining. It's basically doing 90% of editing beforehand by really looking at what the story is and what the character arcs are and what is needed to end in a satisfying way. What exactly is the point of the story? That way, when I finally write the fic, the only real editing I have left is awkward sentences and such.

I also came to realize it's better to narrow the focus. This is usually by making only one person the POV character. Also, if I'm rereading something and I keep skipping parts to get to the next interesting part, that part probably isn't necessary and I can chuck it.
