I agree that it gets repetitive, but it's a preventive measure to not get booted to the not!secret section, as the mods tend to be a bit inconsistent about what in what phrasing is a secret considered a secret and in what phrasing it's not.

Completely incorrect! "Secret because:" means nothing if whatever came before it isn't a secret in the first place. See:

FINAL FANTASY SUCKS
Secret because my flist loves Final Fantasy

... nope, still doesn't make the first part a secret.

I don't know, isn't something automatically a "secret" if someone is unwilling/unable to say it for some reason? They don't have to have good reasons, and the "I THINK" is implied at the beginning of even that "FINAL FANTASY SUCKS" one. I'm not saying that's not a boring as hell, generic, so-what-you-have-your-opinion-others-have-theirs secret, but if they can't say they think Final Fantasy sucks because they'd be torn apart by their flist/they don't want to argue or hurt people's feelings, it's still a secret, because they can't/won't admit to it.

But if they submit a secret saying "FINAL FANTASY SUCKS" isn't it implied that it is a secret for various reasons in the first place?

So does this mean we should allow images that just say "FINAL FANTASY SUCKS" on them?

Ahhh, yeah, I didn't think it through that far. That makes sense- it does still make it a secret, of a sort, if they feel they can't say that, but not necessarily the sort of secret that should be found here, since people could abuse the hell out of it. They'd probably have to give a better reason. ("Final Fantasy sucks, I think it's overrated, the storylines are cliche and sometimes insulting, and the characters are flat. But I could never tell anyone, because 99.9% of gaming fandom would boil me in oil" or something.)

It was just something I'd been musing on, what makes things a secret... and I do still think the "FINAL FANTASY SUCKS" is a secret, but probably not an appropriate one, no.

Actually, they're very consistent. Generally, if a secret with a subjective statement is presented as an opinion (which almost always means it contains some variation of "I think"), it's a secret. If it's presented as fact (which usually means no "I" or "me"), it's a not!secret. If it's phrased as a question, it's usually a not!secret.

And there are plenty of not!secrets that have the "secret because". I agree; the only time they're not pointless or annoying is when they're funny.
