I suppose it's my fault for playing it so late, but my first impression was that I was playing the fanfic version of FF6 and Celes was the Mary Sue self-insert topping Terra: beautiful, infused with magic in a possibly angstier version than Terra, source of drama, etc. Which, true or not, colored my opinion, and as such when I was confronted with a general who happened to have an opera-grade voice and could learn an aria in not-very-much-time-at-all, I was...hurting on the inside.

....

That being said and done, Ultros is, indeed, shibby.

I thought that it was rather impossible to top Terra, considering she had the whole half-esper thing (and just the memory of how badly her parents' love story was handled still makes me giggle), the "traumatized prisoner of war" shtick and Locke doing the wolf-with-lost-sheep routine. Altogether, I liked other characters better and so hardly noticed Celes. Plus, I always assumed that her voice was just passable and just barely got her through her handful of lines. Not that there's any canon proof for that, but...

Ultros was fabulous. That seems to be the point everybody agrees on.

That is true. And now I can't help but wonder which love story is worse, FF6 or FF8? Anyway. I can't say I'm entirely a fan of Terra either, though she won points for how her story ended. But yeah. I guess it's mostly a consequence of how I came to the game, with the entire it being pushed on me opposed to me picking it up thingy.

Actually, I'm rather fond of FF8's love story. I think that the designers made it too easy for the characters to veer off in different directions so that the romance could seem to come out of nowhere -- but that's neither here nor there.

Try reading The Lies of Locke Lamora? It's not terribly relevant, but the author named his main character after FFVI's Locke (which was my reason for playing the game in the first place), and having the association may better your opinion of the overall experience. If you like the book, of course.

For FF8, I'd lump it into the category of "Great idea, but the execution leaves something to be desired." That's just me, mind you, and as seen in pages 1-4 my opinion clearly differs from the mainstream.

Anyway, I actually will go track that down, I've been looking for something to read and I liked enough of the cast to play FF6 anyway so...yeah. Assume that if there isn't a "I HATE YOU THE BOOK SUCKED!" secret under take it to comments that I found it much to my liking and many thanks for the suggestion.
