From the few comments I've seen him make on LJ, I suspect he feels the same.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-25 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I can hardly blame him. The series has eaten up so much of his life and he must be under enormous pressure from his publisher as well as the public.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-25 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I 100% believe he has no intention of ever writing another word on it.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-26 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I find that hard to believe. I can totally believe he's reluctant and stressed out and not enjoying prospect of trying to finish this huge project. But I don't see him deciding just to write the whole thing off.

I mean, he's an older gentleman. If I was in his shoes, I'd sure as shooting want to spend my remaining years getting high and watching football instead of writing some crap that all my fans are going to hate no matter what I do.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-26 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. He's also a writer. Finishing his work might be more important to him than getting high and watching football. Look at Robert Jordan and his plans when he was terminally ill.

As a writer who will gladly do anything to get out of writing, this comment made me LOL.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-26 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think he's going to finish but I honestly believe he's over the series for the most part, like he wouldn't even be bothering with it anymore if it wasn't such a big cash grab for him.

He seems way more into writing other things.

I never got the hate for AFFC. I thought the religion and politics were very interesting, not to mention Arya's plot and finally chapters from Cersei's POV.

But the fifth book was a sordid mess, yup. It was obvious that it was super rushed. Really can't blame GRRM for losing interest, though part of me wishes we got a giant troll ending.

I didn't mind AFFC, however I haven't managed to get through the last one yet as it's so dull!

Dance of Dragons spoilers

Urgh, I know, like. Tyrion getting drunk and being emotionally destroyed and that whole mess of ship chapters. Dany is torn, we get it. Fifty shades of Greyjoy, *we get it*. And all the rambling chapters from new characters we don't gaf about whose background is ultimately be pointless anyway because they're on the deathlist since day one.

This is probably blasphemy but I may just finish the show and leave it at that, I don't know if I'll finish the books or not.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-26 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
You lasted longer than I did. I gave up halfway through the third one.

100 pages

(Anonymous) 2017-07-26 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
That's as far into DwD as I got before I gave up. I just didn't care anymore.

This is one of the very few instances where show/movie is better than the book.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-26 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
This is exactly how I feel. The last two books were really underwhelming. I can't believe how much filler there was. How can someone write a book that's over a thousand pages and virtually NO progress or change is made by the end. The whole time I was like "GET ON WITH IT". Also, I'm pissed that he's killed pretty much every character I liked. What he did with Brienne especially pissed me off. What a waste.

The real nail in the coffin was when GRRM said he wasn't going to let anyone else continue the series for him if he dies before finishing. The dude is old as shit, not in the best health, and he writes at a snails pace. With all the loose ends remaining, there's almost no chance, barring a miracle, that he'll finish before he dies.

I'd watch the TV series but the books already had enough gratuitous rape, and I've heard the show has even more. Ugh. It makes me too uncomfortable.

The Theon chapters in ADWD are some of the best of the whole series though.
