Re: Job Thread

Well, I pulled my IRA funds and should be getting them sometime next week. So I'll be able to get a car and apply for jobs.

But...I've been thinking about applying for a job teaching English overseas. I'd love to visit a new country while saving up some money but I don't know how I would do away from home for a year (at least). I am qualified for the job (a bit overqualified because I have an education degree and can get certified) but not sure if I am qualified for the life change. :P

The JET? I had friend who did it, and it was really hard for her. But I've also had other friends whose friends have done it and they really enjoyed it and did well. Do you know anyone with experience with the program that you can talk to about it to get an idea of what you might be in for?

Oh, not sure if I would do JET. Maybe EPIK. Or just go through a private recruiter.

I've been on the TEFL subreddit looking around for info.

Oh, I didn't know about that one. Well, good. Whatever you chose, I wish you luck.

BE VERY VERY CAREFUL WITH PRIVATE ONES.

I've had friends who have success with both JET and private ones but you have to be insanely careful you don't end up with ridiculous bosses.

I wish you the best of luck. Have you ever been away from your family for a long period of time? I wanted to get far away for college but then realized I couldn't do it long term. I came home every two months just for a weekend even. I know you're close with your family and I also know it's hard to take off when you teach overseas but I have had friends who have done it for years. One did it for 5 years and another for 3 and loved it (and many more who did it for less time)

Oh yeah, before I accept any job, I'll be sure to ask about the school on some TEFL boards.

I've been away for college and I only went home during Christmas break. Granted, I could have been home in two hours if need be, I just never felt the need to. I don't think I'd do it for more than 1-2 years. I mostly think it'd be a fun way to earn some money since you can save quite a bit depending on where you teach.

I definitely agree that it can be a great way to save tons of money (both friends who did it long term paid off their student loans much faster)

Other things to consider: are you on any special medications? Finding the same medical care, if you have some strange disease can very challenging (one of my friends who is living abroad actually flies back to the US for her treatment)

Any special diets? Allergies? Be cautious about eating out. For example, Japan is not at all vegetarian friendly because they put fish sauce in everything or fish flakes. Which are really yummy, honestly, but if you can't eat them or have an allergy it can be challenging.

No special medications other than some stuff for my face. But a bottle of that literally lasts me years. And no allergies that I am aware of. :D

Go for it!

(I'm not trying to discourage you at all, just trying to point out things you may not have considered)

Also make sure someone in your family has a valid passport at all times, this way if something happens, someone can get to you.
