I always took Shinji/Kaworu as people being really desperate for BL back in the day because there was considerably less of it back when Eva first aired.

So like in any anime where one male character flirted even slightly it was always inevitable people would ship it.

SA: I mean, I don't think the shipping of it came out of nowhere - didn't the original version of the manga have Shinji admitting that he loved Kaworu, after all? Even in the anime I still feel it was intended to be romantic.

My issue with Kawoshin is that people kept shoving it in my face, and it was pushed as the only "good" ship, the one that good lgbtqia fans who could see past unhealthy het ships ship, with the implication that you weren't queer enough if you didn't go for it. On one hand I get this is partially a reaction to the homophobic Asushin, Rei/Shinji, and Misato/Shinji shippers, and they can go toss themselves off a cliff. On the other hand... if someone makes assumptions about my sexuality based off something like what fucking ships I do or don't like, they can take their pure precious Kawoshin and blow it out their ass. My queerness doesn't hinge on my fandom preferences, thanks.

I always just tend to ignore those types, there have always been some BL fans who tend to be a bit extra about it. I always laughed when straight girls tried to force me into BL, like I don't need to pretend to be into it when I'm already a part of the LGBT community, but thanks.
