I'm also the sort of person who would ignore those regulations if I intended to commit a crime.

Like, do you really think if I snapped I would give a fuck about buying my gun legally? Applying for the right licenses? Going through a background check? Do you think I'd care even if guns had been totally banned? Fuck no. I'd just track down a black market dealer. There are no regulations that would stop someone like me from getting a gun.

Which is also why gun control needs to be hand in hand with reformations in mental health care.

The fact that you would have to resort to a black market dealer is already one barrier to an actual shooting -- they ain't exactly Lucky Gunner, are they? And when we project this population-wide, you can bet it'll filter out a significant number of potential shooters who share your psychological profile but can't/won't acquire illegal firearms. Will it stop shootings from happening? No, of course not, not with all the guns in this goddamn country (as you rightly pointed out). Will it bring the numbers down? I don't see why the fuck not.
