I think that's largely political polarisation. Our population is growing beyond our ability to feed and house people, we have politicians who think the best way to deal with that is not to deal with it, and honestly a lot of humans on this planet don't have a good future. People are scared. They're looking for enemies, and they will divide the world into a Left and a Right. That's what you're experiencing.

Eventually society will explode in civil war. The USA has for a while going through the same kind of pre-genocide propaganda that Rwanda went through in the early 1990's. And since the USA is an enormous country, that rhetoric spills out into the rest of the English speaking world.
